Month at a Glance - June 2021

JUNE IS HERE AND WE ARE MOVING OUTDOORS FOR GREAT PROGRAMMING!

Art on the Broad Street Plaza , Entertainment on the Broad Street Plaza, Outdoor Bingo, Ice Cream Social with Minnich’s Pharmacy, Baseball Games, Sub/Pretzel Sandwich Sale with R&K Subs, Gateway Health Table Event, Commodity Supplemental Food Program, Fresh Express, York Fresh Food Mobile Produce Market and the PA Farmers Market Nutrition Vouchers plus lots more all return to kick off the summer!

DJ Chris entertains on the Broad Street Plaza on Tuesday, June 22nd from 10:30-11:30. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the music!

Another awesome program we are offering to you is entitled “Society, Dolls and the Civil War” presented by Nancy Walker and Jef Savage.

This program provides an opportunity to learn about the social aspects of the Civil War and to produce a Civil War soft doll sewn by hand. The program, plus all fabric, materials and sewing tools for the dolls are being provided FREE by a Grant from Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, with additional funding from White Rose.

Most Civil War programs are about leaders, logistics, battles and the men that fought them. This program focuses on the social activities of the War. What was everyday life like for the civilian population in the home, in public and on the battlefield. Explore their fashions, entertainments, toys, games and sports. Have fun participating in a guessing game to identify common everyday items of the Civil War and their uses. Explore the changing roles of women in support of the war effort. How much have they changed and what it still common today? Have fun joining in an interactive parlor game. Investigate the influence Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had on America and the War? Find out how Charles Dickens and other authors influenced the abolition of slavery.

From the oldest to the newest, dolls have been around forever. From earliest times, children around the world have had dolls as companions, confidants and collections. What is their history, their characters and their journeys? What did they see and what impact did they have on the Civil War?

During the Civil War many children played with dolls that were lovingly handmade by their mothers from scraps of cloth. You can recreate the past by hand sewing a Civil War era cloth doll of your choice – Miss Victoria or Humpty Dumpty. You will have the opportunity to make Miss Victoria or Humpty as gift for a favorite person or for yourself!

How Do I Sign Up for Jef and Nancy’s program?

Just let the staff know you are interested! We are asking that you commit to the 8-week program starting on Wednesday, June 9th from 10:00-11:15 AM. It runs every Wednesday through July 28th. It will be held outside (weather permitting & rain dates have been built into the schedule if need be). We will have tents, tables, and chairs available for those 60 and over who would like to participate.) Ladies and gentleman are welcome...Jef and Nancy are great speakers and educators!

Month at a Glance - May 2021

Welcome May!!! We have a few changes coming up in May with the weather getting warmer and the sun shining brightly!

We will be stopping our side door pick up for the Grab & Go lunches on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. We will be going back to everyone picking up their lunches at the front door. If you can’t walk to the door, pull close to the front of the building and we will bring them to you if need be.

With having everyone come to the front doors, we can also start providing service to our members and/or future members (60+), outside! Last year we had incredible programs and activities going on and this spring, summer, and fall will be no different!

We have no immediate plans to reopen in the near future. The PA Department of Aging is still enforcing the same social distancing. With that number we are very limited on the amount of people in the building. We would have more outside so it is easier for us to ring the inside activities outside to all of you!

In May we are starting with a few outside activities since Mother Nature is not always predictable but in June you will see many great events planned!

Our first big fundraiser in May is Give Local York on Friday, May 7, 2021. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!!

Give Local York is a Day of Giving in York County. Last year so many generous people gave $3.5 million dollars to over 300 York County Non-Profits! White Rose Senior Center raised $10,577 and we were thrilled! This year our goal has been set for $15,000 and we would LOVE your Support!

Give Local York begins at 12:00 midnight on Friday, May 7, 2021 and runs for 24 hours, ending at 11:59:59 PM. Check out our Face Book Page for updates and things happening on May 7th. The staff has completed “Challenges” in the past once a certain amount of money was raised. This year we have included the “Challenges” to be from staff and volunteers with the theme based on a carnival! Our excellent volunteer, Brian White from Broad Park Manor, has agreed to participate in a Dunk Tank! Now we know you want to come out and dunk him while raising lots of money for WRSC! 365 Days Since COVID-19 Closed the Doors for Members to Enter the Building

March 16, 2020 at 8:00 PM, Governor Tom Wolf closed down all “non-essential” stores, recreational centers, including senior centers and their day programs. Senior Centers were considered “essential” as far as serving Congregate and Home Delivered Meals to our participants, so we remained opened for these services and expanded our activities to include outdoor events as the year went on. Nobody ever thought this global pandemic would go on an entire year!

As much as COVID-19 has been horrible with people getting the virus, dying from the virus, not being able to be with your friends and family, the loneliness and isolation many people felt, White Rose Senior Center (as well as many senior centers) tried our best to stay connected and have fun with our members!

The staff at White Rose Senior Center put together a video entitled “Recap 2020 WRSC” of many of the happenings of March 17, 2020 through March 17, 2021 to commemorate this life changing year. Click HERE to see the White Rose Senior Center You Tube video.

Thanks for the memories and laughter we shared! Remember, we are all in this together!

Month at a Glance - March 2021

WELCOME MARCH…a month closer to warmer weather!!! February was a definitely cold and the most snow we have had in several years. I guess that is par for the course in dealing with COVID-19 for an almost total year. March 17, 2020, was the date that we closed the Center doors from people entering the building except for the essential workers to get the meals and food programs out to all of you! We were able to figure out how to bring many programs outside safely during COVID-19 as the weather got nicer. The big and beautiful shade tree out front was a true blessing to all of us! The staff is working on something special to share with you to commemorate White Rose Senior Center and how COVID-19 changed all of our lives. Look for that on March 17, 2021!

During the Grab and Go Lunch hour of 10:30-11:30 Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we have several fun activities for you to participate in such as “Spirit Days” for Dr. Seuss Week! March 1st celebrate “Cat in the Hat” by wearing your Fun Hat. March 2nd, it’s “Fox in Socks: Rainbow socks, one red, one blue, only silly socks will do” so wear your silly socks and show them to us! On March 3rd, it is Wacky Wednesday, so wear your clothes backwards, inside out, or mismatched. Wacky hair is s bonus! Of course pictures will be shared on Facebook!

We also have Nutrition Month handouts every Monday, Bible Study Guides from Bruce Shaub, “Roll a Leprechaun” Take Home Game, “Color a Sea Scene” Take Home Game, a Spring Coloring Page, craft kits, and an Easter Egg Hunt planned to put smiles on your faces!

Many have asked for another Sub Sale so the R&K Sub and Sandwich Sale sheets will be distributed starting March 1st. The orders and monies are due on or before Tuesday, March 16, 2021. The subs and sandwiches will be delivered and ready for pick up on Tuesday, March 23rd at 10:30 AM during our lunch service hour or until 4:00 when we close for the day. Members…don’t forget to ask your children if they could help us out and sell at their work locations! We would be glad to provide them a fundraiser sheet…or better yet CLICK HERE to print one off!

White Rose Senior Center has been collaborating with other York County Senior Centers to bring VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING to as many people as we can to prevent social isolation.
