FEBRUARY 2021 VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING with YORK COUNTY SENIOR CENTERS

York County Senior Centers Share Virtual Programs

Some of the York County Senior Centers have decided to share our Virtual Programs with each other in hopes to reach more older adults. Each month, a new listing will be shared. You may want to contact the senior center that is hosting an activity with any questions. If this grows, we may try to find funding to have a Virtual Senior Center in York County, similar to Lancaster County!

Month at a Glance - January 2021

A New Year always brings promise for a new beginning, a new resolution, and a new look of life. After the year we have all had with dealing with COVID-19 and politics, we have a new hope of better things to come! A vaccine and new medicines to help battle the pandemic are here and in due time, we pray we will be able to get back to our routines and things we loved doing prior to the pandemic.

We have a few NEW things we will be offering at White Rose Senior Center. One is for our Lunch Pick Up. Lunches will still be handed out from 10:30-11:30 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (unless there is a holiday or we are closed for inclement weather). The change is that if you drive or somebody will bring you to the Center, you may pick up your lunch at the first side door. If you walk to the Center, please continue to come to the front doors. This change is due to the colder weather and will likely go back to what we have been doing since March 17, 2020 in the springtime when we can do outdoor programming again.

The second NEW change is that some of the York County Senior Centers are offering/sharing our Virtual Programming so more older adults can stay connected. Please contact your local senior center for a list of virtual programs via Zoom and Facebook Live. We plan to run this for a few months to see what the response is before we go and look for additional funding for a Virtual Senior Center idea like what Lancaster County is offering! Your thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated on this new concept!

On Tuesday, January 19th, we are asking all who participated in the Secret Pal Program for 2020 to bring in your $5.00 gift for your Secret Pal for the Reveal during the lunch service. We will distribute it to your Secret Pal on Wednesday, January 20th during the lunch service. If you would like to participate in the NEW Secret Pals for 2021, you will receive a paper to complete and turn into the staff. New Secret Pals for 2021 will be picked on Monday, January 25th during the lunch service!

TAFE (Theatre Arts For Everyone) will add a NEW Program to WRSC. During Fresh Express Food Distribution on Thursday, January 14th and Thursday, January 28thth beginning at 10:00, TAFE will have a Puzzle Packet for you to do! We want to thank them for helping to keep us all sharp!!!

To view our January Calendar, Menu, and Newsletter in English and Spanish, click on the links below. You will notice that we have less activities in January which is due to staff out for vacations and maternity leave. So that leads me to our Best NEW happening is that Jenna and Justin welcomed a New daughter on December 3, 2020. A picture of Joslynn Marie and her big sister, Jaelynn Marie, is in the January 2021 Newsletter for your viewing!

COVID-19 is still very much real and hitting many friends and families that are close to us. The CDC sent out a flier entitled “Personal and Social Activities”. Click HERE to review it. As always please wear your mask when coming to the doors and talking to your friends outside. Stay 6 foot apart from others and wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after touching the doors and handouts to stay as safe and healthy as you can! Your safety is our number one concern!

Finally, please let us know if you need additional food. Food insecurity is a huge concern and we do have extra meals available to people 60 or over. You just need to ask the staff…no questions asked. We also have a “Food Assistance Resources” Sheet available with information on Food Pantries, Food Bank Programs and Distribution Sites, the SNAP Program, Programs for Kids and Programs for Seniors. To view the flier in English, click HERE. To view the flier in Spanish, click HERE.

And finally, here is our wish and toast for 2021…”We hope we all have a Happier New Year in 2021 and can return to the Center, a place where fun is always had! Stay safe and healthy friends!”

Month at a Glance - December 2020

Today marks 178th day that White Rose Senior Center doors have been closed to the public coming inside of the building BUT, that doesn’t mean we haven’t been “working our tails off” to put smiles on our members faces! We are hoping to bring each of you a warm Christmas feeling every time you come to our front doors!

We will, and are asking you, the older adults, to dress up like Reindeer, Snowmen, Elves and even Santa and Mrs. Claus each week in December! We have crafts, we have cookie decorating kits, we have Christmas coloring papers, we have a White Elephant Gift Exchange, we have “Stuff the Stocking” (December’s Act of Kindness to cover to help cover the cost for shipping of the Operation Gratitude donations we received for November. These will be shipped then to California before Christmas!) and we have Santa coming to deliver the Christmas Meal on December 15th as well as the Christmas Gift for all of our members who come on that day!

Two December attractions that White Rose Senior Center is known for is the annual Homes for the Holidays Progressive Dinner and the Christmas Box Raffle Fundraiser. “Are they continuing you ask?”. Why YES THEY ARE with some slight modifications COVID-19 Style!

Homes for the Holidays Progressive Diner has been renamed as the “At Home for the Holidays Un-Progressive Lunch”! On December 11, 2020 at 12:00, those who signed up and paid $10, the staff generously will be donating their time and treasurers to provide a meal and goodie bags to those participating!. The people will come to the front door and pick up their lunch. The meal is a 3-Course Meal which consists of Salad from Brendaliz, Lasagna and Bread Sticks prepared by Lisa, and Christmas Cookies made by Nicole. Beginning at 1:00 that afternoon, those who signed up for the Un-Progressive Lunch will participate in the Zoom Activities! You are able to phone in if you don’t want or know how to do Zoom. We will give you the link and number closer to the time. Brendaliz is singing at her very own Christmas Concert; Lisa will be calling Christmas Bingo (the bingo card and markers will be in the Goodie Bag at noon); and Nicole will be playing What’s the Lyric? Christmas Carol. So much fun and cheer will be had! Hurry and sign up so we know how many people to plan for!!!

The Christmas Box Raffle Fundraiser has also been renamed to the 2020 “Mini” Christmas Box Raffle Fundraiser. We will have 7 smaller decorative boxes on display outside the front door when we are serving meals Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 10:30-11:30, HOWEVER, you may come to the front doors anytime beginning Monday, December 7 through Friday, December 18th and purchase Raffle Tickets and peek in the door at the display. The tickets are: 1 for $100, 6 for $5.00 or 17 for $10.00. You will write your name/phone number on the back of each ticket and place it in the smaller box in front of the gift box. We also will show the boxes on Face Book Live on Monday, December 7th and Monday, December 14th at 1:00 pm. We will have Pay Pal and Cash App as additional ways to purchase raffle tickets and let Lisa know which box you want your tickets in. The Christmas Box Raffle will end on 12/18 at 11:45 am. The boxes are valued between $30 and $100…THIS WOULD MAKE FOR AN AWESOME CHRISTMAS GIFT!!!

As much as COVID-19 has changed the World, people have gotten sick and even died; we don’t see our family and friends like we used to; we can’t go to places that we loved for pleasure; we have gained many wonderful treasures and memories. We have had to think “outside the box”! Technology has been huge and challenging even for some tech-savvy people we all know. Internet and devices among our older adult friends are a big issue. That reminds me…with the holiday season upon us, maybe you are thinking, “What can I get for my older adult relative or friend?” . Think about technology, such as tablets and internet, and how you can help them stay connected and not feel so isolated.

At White Rose Senior Center, we are slowly growing our technology programs through Face Book Live and Zoom. With the colder weather approaching, we will be adding additional virtual programming and offering phone tech advice and handouts to help the older adults GET CONNECTED! Click below for the link to the December 2020 Newsletter and Calendar and see what might interest you or your older adult in your life!

Month at a Glance - November 2020

November is here and Thanksgiving may look a bit different this year. One thing that will remain the same is that we are one big extended family at White Rose Senior Center who care about each other!

As we are moving into the cooler months, we are still serving lunches outside the door, selling Thanksgiving Raffle Tickets, and planning activities such as crafts and games for you outdoors, weather permitting. We have added a few more virtual activities beginning on November 19th with The First Thanksgiving Virtual Field Trip: Mayflower; 11/20 The Pilgrim Village; 11/23 The Wampanoag Homesite; 11/24 The Plimoth Plantation; and 11/25 The Studio Tour & Behind the Scenes about The History of the Macy’s Day Parade all through Facebook. The links will be provided on the given time and date through our Facebook page (White Rose Senior Center). Why not check these programs out and learn more information?

To honor our members who are Veteran’s, we have asked them all to bring a picture of themselves beginning November 2nd through November 6th. We will honor you on the new Digital Sign out front and on Monday, November 9th, we will prepare an “Appreciation Breakfast” just for them! We are thankful to the men and women who serve and have served in the Armed Forces and we salute you! God bless you all!

We have two “Spirit Days” in November. The first one is on November 18th. Come dressed like Mickey or Minnie and perhaps win a prize! The second is November 30th where you are asked to wear PURPLE for National Alzheimer’s Disease Month. This sadly effects many of our loved ones so we always need to support the efforts to find a cure.

Zumba Gold with Heather will continue on Wednesdays at 1:00. Call or email us for the link.

The two remaining STARS Programs for November are scheduled for November 10th from 2:00-4:00 “English Paper Piercing Candle Mat” and November 17th from 11:00-1:30 “Bingo and Lunch at Hoss’s Steak & Seahouse” in East York. These classes are brought to you by Springettsbury Township and White Rose Senior Center.

We would love for you to join in the fun and become an extended family member at White Rose Senior Center! To receive our newsletter and calendar for November, click the links below.
