The summer is flying by and you definitely don’t want to miss all of the fun things going on at White Rose Senior Center! Yes, we are still not open to the public coming inside of our building but we are offering many great activities outside and virtually!

In July we started the Broad Street on the Plaza Entertainment Series where we schedule great entertainment and you bring our lawn chair and sit 6 foot apart from each other under a shady tree! The program is growing and people are enjoying seeing their friends! We had an accordion player, a cello player, Santa, and all sorts of “critters” from “Creatures Great and Small”. On August 4th from 10:30-11:15, Lisa will carve out some fruit for Fruit Decorating and Carving. Fruit kabobs will be distributed to the attendees!

On August 11th, DJ Chris Wagman will entertain with “Oldies But Goodies”. I am sure some dancing might be going on (6 feet apart of course)!

Lori Trimmer from West Manchester Township will bring “Idgie the Trickster” to perform for us. Idgie is so sweet and will melt your heart!

And on August 25th from 10:30-11:30, Wally, the Emotional Support Alligator, and his trainer, Joie Henney, will fascinate you with this world famous alligator!

Besides the Broad Street on the Plaza entertainment schedule, we will have Fruit Week where on Monday, August 3rd, you are to dress in Pink and Green for Watermelon Spirit Day. July 2020 Happenings

Can you believe that it is July already? Well we have many great activities planned outside for your enjoyment and to socially distance with your friends! White Rose Senior Center is definitely blessed to have people come to the front doors to receive their meals versus those who drive up to the Center…you get more of our attention and conversing!

We are starting live entertainment on the Broad Street Plaza on Tuesdays from 10:30-11:15! Our first entertainer is our very own Chotz Grove back by popular demand playing her accordion! Many of you saw her perform for the WRSC Staff Challenges for Give Local York and she is a true inspiration! Chotz will play on July 7th!

The second performer is Lisa’s Little Sister for the Distinguished Young Women Program. Her name is Maria Cruz and she will play her cello on July 14th. Maria will be a senior at William Penn this fall. The Distinguished Young Women Program will be held on Saturday, July 25th.

Christmas in July will be held the week of July 20th and guess who will be stopping by on his little red motorcycle…none other than Santa Claus! Santa will be here for “social distancing” Christmas pictures on July 21st and he will be sporting his summer attire! WE heard that Santa and Mrs. Claus have been hanging out at the beach and camp grounds during their summer hiatus!

On July 28th, Lisa Sell with “Creatures Great and Small” will brings many different animals, reptiles and critters to share with you. I hear there will be a dog a hairless cat, a bunny, birds, snakes, geckos, tarantulas and much more! Bring your lawn chair and sit 6 foot away from others for a great morning activity under the shade tree in front of the Center!

Of course we still have the Farmers Market Nutrition Voucher Applications that we are doing for persons 60 or over who meet the income guidelines. If you would like an application for the Farmers Market Nutrition Voucher application click HERE.

Two Weeks at a Glance - June 22 through July 3, 2020

The weather has been so delightful lately and we hope you all are doing well!

We have several activities planned for the remainder of June and beginning of July that we would like to make you aware of!

Of course we will continue to provide hot lunches out the door at the Center on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday plus 2 frozen meals on Wednesdays for Thursday and Friday. You need to pre-register to assure yourself meals. Just call us or tell us at the door. The times are 10:30-11:30.

We have a Red, White, and Blue Raffle Ticket Sale ($1.00/pair) going on June 22-24. The Facebook Live Red, White and Blue Raffle will be held on June 24th at 1:00.

We will celebrate June Birthdays with cupcakes and Birthday Trivia on June 23 and the Birthday Trivia Winner will be announced on Facebook on June 24th at 2:00. Don’t forget to turn that trivia in!

Fresh Express with Central Food Bank will be held on Thursday, June 25th at 11:00. We receive 75-85 boxes and they go quick! Make sure you bring a cart if you walk and come to the front doors. If you drive, pull to the side door closest to East Market Street. DO NOT come early if you are driving because cars block the road and make it very dangerous!!!

Friday, June 25th at 1:00 on Facebook Live, we hold “Fairy Friday” where we pull one Active member’s Name to deliver a special treat to!

On Monday, June 29th, Bruce has been providing a Bible Study packet each month for people to take home and we will be offering another R&K Sub & Sandwich Sale (orders and money taken). The subs and sandwiches will be delivered on Tuesday, July 14th (10:30-11:30).

And to welcome in July…we will be selling Patriotic Milkshakes for $2.00. Choose between Chocolate, Vanilla, or Strawberry! YUMMY!!!

Many of you have been picking up the application for the Farmers Market Nutrition Vouchers at the Center. You may return them to Lisa and she will scan and email them onto the York County Area Agency on Aging. A staff person there will validate the application and send you the $24 paper vouchers to be used at a variety of produce stands. There is not a paper that lists all of the sites accepting the vouchers but a web site will be enclosed with the vouchers. Do to COVID-19, not all of the produce stands got their location in. The web site is being updated all of the time. HOWEVER, right outside of our building on the first and third Thursday of each month, the Mobile Produce Market is available for anyone! The hours are 10:30-12:00 and Selah Phillips and Metta Barbor are wonderful to work with!

White Rose Senior Center would like to welcome the following NEW MEMBERS…Lydia Suarez, Ana Florenciani, and Miles Jackson! If you would like to join us and are 60 years or older, bring your ID and stop by so we could tell you how to join in the fun, even outside during COVID-19 times! We have some entertainment and more outdoor activities coming in the next two weeks!

As you know, White Rose Senior Center prides ourselves on being a resource for people throughout the community. We try our best to share information or find out answers that you may have concerning an issue. Well yesterday, Deborah Gogniat from Wellspan sent out an email that we think sounds like fun and wanted to share. It is a 12-week community challenge that begins June 15th (I know, one date late but you can still jump on board!) as part of Transforming Health’s “Here With You” campaign. This is a walking program to encourage participants to walk in honor of those on the frontline of the COVID-19 crisis: essential workers, healthcare staff, first responders and many others. It is a fun and effective way to increase your physical activity levels while at the same time show your support for amazing heroes on the frontline helping us stay safe! Here is the link for the “To the Moon and Back Walking Challenge”. You also can earn prizes!!!!

Stay safe and healthy friends!

Two Weeks at a Glance - June 8 through June 19, 2020

We are half way through 2020 and what a half a year it has been. COVID-19 took over our whole World and there is so much uncertainty that we are all faced with. Every day we hear new guidelines of best practices on how to stay safe and be healthy. We all are wanting to go back to what we all knew. Many of us do not like change but sometimes change is good, it makes us stronger, we figure out ways to be better as people and as a community. It is all challenging and none of us know the correct answers. We all just try to do the best we can and be kind to other people’s feelings because we do not know what is happening in everyone’s lives.

White Rose Senior Center is continuing to offer Take Out Meals, Programming Virtually, Activities to Do at Home, Food Distributions, some Fundraising Activities and Treats! We try hard to give everyone some time when they come to get their lunches or food boxes. We are very aware that we all want to see and talk to someone so we don’t feel isolated. We are here for you! If you have some friends who are 60 or older, invite them to join the Center. Even though we look a lot different now, we would love to meet new members! Tell them to bring their ID and come to the front doors where we will sign them up and explain all of the fun things we have to offer! Check out the 2-Week Calendar (June 8th-19th) to see what is coming up!

The White Rose Senior Center Rainbow Walk

May is Older Americans Month 2020. Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation's observance of Older Americans Month. The theme for 2020 is "Make Your Mark." This theme was selected to encourage and celebrate countless contributions that older adults make to our communities.

White Rose Senior Center believes that EVERY OLDER ADULT who attends the Center has many endless ways they benefit this community and the one they live in whether they are by their  Time, their Talents, and their Contributions.

On May 26th and 27th, White Rose Senior Center began creating a Sidewalk Chalk Mosaic entitled, “White Rose Senior Center Rainbow Walk”, where the older adults who came for their lunches where asked which attribute do they bring to White Rose Senior Center…their Time, their Talent, or their Contributions. Each attribute had a color attached to it and look what was created! Other volunteers who were not present on May 26th and 27th were included in the mosaic and all of the older adults are listed below (We may have missed a few people and apologize for that.)!

White Rose Senior Center is blessed to have so many awesome members who make it the great senior center that it is! They have all made their mark at WRSC and in our hearts!

Two Weeks at a Glance - May 25 through June 5, 2020

We are fast approaching the Memorial Day Weekend and York County opening up today in Pennsylvania into the Yellow Phase, White Rose Senior Center Staff and Board of Directors are hoping you are all doing well and staying healthy!

Many of you have asked, “When is White Rose Senior Center opening up?” Our answer is that we still do not know but it won’t be until York County is in the Green Phase. That may be a couple months and because we offer programs to the older adults, we may be looking at the later days of the Green Phase. Safety is our number one concern for all of us.

We all know this has been challenging in a variety of ways for everyone. For our older adult population it is not seeing their friends from the Center daily except if they happen to run into them as they are picking up the Take Home Meals Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. More and more of our members are coming for the meals and food distributions. Call us and we can tell you how to order lunches (717-843-9704), when Fresh Express is and the Commodity Supplemental  Food Program for Seniors with the Cheese. (FYI…the next Fresh Express is Thursday, May 28th from 11:00-2:00 and the JUNE & JULY Commodity Supplemental Food Program for Seniors with the Cheese will be held on Thursday, June 4th from 9:00-3:00)

Our staff are offering some online programs through Facebook Live and Zoom. Please call or ask us how to do these programs if you are able to participate. At minimal, you need to have a cell phone to do both mediums.

During the lunch days we are distributing handouts, our two-week calendars and menus, crafts, puzzle packets, games, etc., to keep your mind busy and active. With the nicer weather approaching, take a walk or sit outside and breath in some fresh air! It does your mental health good!

I recently read a few articles about social isolation and the benefits of pets in older adults. The links for both are listed below. All of the articles are written by Kim Dalton, kim@seniorgardener.org

“Why Seniors Should Avoid Isolation” - https://living.medicareful.com/why-seniors-should-avoid-isolation

“The Health Benefits of Pets for Older Adults” -   https://www.nextavenue.org/health-benefits-pets-older-adults/

Memorial Day is on Monday, May 25, 2020, we would like to HONOR and MOURN the military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Your sacrifices have not gone unnoticed and are appreciated for our freedoms that we have today. Kim Dalton also had an article entitled “At-Home Services that Can Help Seniors Veterans” -   https://www.homeadvisor.com/r/home-services-that-help-senior-veterans/

Two Weeks at a Glance - May 11-22, 2020

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for starting off May 1, 2020 with a BIG BANG! Give Local York was held on Friday, May 1, 2020. It was a huge online day of caring and giving for 305 York County Non-Profits. People were so generous with donations that broke the records from 2019! There were 11, 101 donors who raised helped to raise $3.551,930!!!

HOW DID WHITE ROSE SENIOR CENTER DO? Friends, members, and families of WRSC raised $10,001!!!. These funds will be used to continue operations at the Center in many ways such as, activities for the older adults and virtual programming and classes. COVID-19 has made many of us realize that we need better internet, more education on using technology, and more devices in the hands of our older adults to stay connected.

May is also Older Americans Month. Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation's observance of Older Americans Month. The theme for 2020 is "Make Your Mark." This theme was selected to encourage and celebrate countless contributions that older adults make to our communities. White Rose Senior Center is planning a salute to the valuable volunteers who support White Rose Senior Center the last week in May. The next 2-week calendar will end on May 22nd but look for the following calendar (may 25-June 5, 2020) of what ways we will be honoring our WRSC Volunteers and letting all of them know how they have “Made Their Mark” at White Rose Senior Center!

As we are slowly opening up Pennsylvania under Governor Tom Wolf’s plan, people are asking us “When will we be able to return to White Rose Senior Center?” Our answer continues to be that, “We don’t have an answer. Your safety is our primary concern. We will continue to be here to serve take out meals, deliver home delivered meals, provide games and activities virtually, and offer a big smile when we see you!” The hot “Take Out Meals” are on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30. On Wednesdays, persons 60 and over receive a frozen meal for Thursday and Friday. The 2nd & 4th Thursdays we offer Fresh Express Produce to WRSC Members and/or Broad Park Manor Residents. The Commodity Supplemental Food Box for Seniors will be distributed the 1st Thursday in June and Mobile Fresh Produce will begin in June too.

The Inside Aging (May 2020) report from Secretary Robert Torres at the Department of Aging came out today. He wrote about a survey conducted by the Pennsylvania Council on Aging that was completed in April by 3700 Pennsylvanians aged 60 and older. We all are concerned about social isolation and its impact on older adults. The results were interesting and quite in tune with what our desires are for the Give Local York fundraising effort that we completed last Friday. Some of the major findings are as follows:

  1. Older adults still engage with their communities, on average, almost twice weekly to get groceries.

  2. Almost 6% of the “oldest” older adults (91 years and older) reported that they still attended religious events.

  3. Fewer than 20% of the “oldest” older adults have access to smart phones, but more than 20% stated that they were interested in virtual connections.

The last paragraph in the Executive Summary Report sums it up as we move forward through COVID-19 and beyond: “Food access, social isolation and connectivity have and will continue to be issues affecting older adults’ well-being and quality of life; the responses drawn in real time during this pandemic present an opportunity to deepen policymakers’ understanding of these major issues and engage partners throughout our Pennsylvania communities in the development of thoughtful, creative and effective solutions.” Here is the link for the entire article: https://mailchi.mp/pa/inside-aging-march-4631393?e=bda3f42419

Month at a Glance - Second Part of April 2020

White Rose Senior Center remains closed to the public as do many places in Pennsylvania and across the United States. We are her providing “Take-Out Meals” to our senior center members or anyone 60 or over and delivering home delivered meals to our 125 recipients on Mondays. They are all receiving 7 frozen meals. “Take-Out Meals” are handed out on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30. On these days the people are receiving a hot meal. On Wednesdays, they receive two frozen meals to be used on Thursday and Friday. The older adults must call or get on-line with copilot to pre-register their lunches. Jenna is working from home to call the pre-registered people to make sure they are coming on that day. Often we have people who did not pre-register and they must wait until closer to 11:15 to see if we have any left over.

As I am typing this post, this is the 17th working day that WRSC has been operating differently due to the Coronavirus Outbreak or COVID-19. Life has certainly changed, we have all found out things about ourselves such as what is most important and what we can do without. As we all continue to pray, continue to provide the best service that we can offer, and to be kind and patient with everyone we come in contact with, always remember, “We Will All Get Through This Together!”

White Rose Senior Center is participating in Give Local York on May 1, 2020 (12:00 am-12:00 pm). This is a fantastic on-line fundraiser where last year we raised over $11,000.00! Our goal for 2020 is $15,000.00! Every bit of money that is donated goes to support the entire operation and activities at White Rose Senior Center and is APPRECIATED by EVERYONE!

Give Local York 2020 put together a video that is on youtube called “We Are All In This Together”. We sent in pictures of some of our wonderful Home Delivered Meal Drivers and the White Rose Senior Center Staff. Today we are getting Fresh Express from Central PA Food Box in Harrisburg. We are putting items in a box to distribute from 11:30-3:00. We are putting together 75 boxes so first come, first served of older adults (60 & over) or Broad Park Manor Residents.

As we receive our produce from Fresh Express and at the markets and grocery stores during the COVID-19 outbreak, we all need to know how to wash the fruits and vegetables properly. Here is a great article to help you out. Click HERE.

We still have a few April & May Commodity Supplemental Food Boxes for Seniors from The York County Food Bank.  Please come and pick them up if you receive it from us. If you are 60 or over, meet the income guidelines for your household, will bring your latest bank statement or your award letter from Social Security, as well as your driver’s license or PA ID. The current income guidelines are posted HERE.

We as Pennsylvanians have been asked by Governor Tom Wolf to wear protective face coverings. The staff is wearing them when we are dealing with the public and our members. We are asking all of you who come to the door to do the same. The masks are for your protection as well as ours. We have attached two links here for you to get instructions on how to make them by sewing or no sewing. These all provide items that you probably have at your house such as material, an old t-shirt, a bandana, rubber bands, elastic, or hair ties. The articles also let you knw how to wash these DIY masks by simply putting them in your washing machine as often as needed. To look at the first article from the CDC click HERE. Another article on making a DIY mask is available HERE.

We are trying to Social Distance every time you come to the Center to pick up your lunch, food boxes, Fresh Express, or to ask us a question. Social Distancing means staying 6 foot away from each other, no touching, hugging, or kissing! We all are feeling the loneliness of no touch and no hugs because frankly, many of us at White Rose Senior Center are huggers and kissers by nature. Please just blow a kiss and squeeze the air…we all feel it and look forward to the day we can reach out and touch someone but it is not now!!!

On March 27, Governor Wolf signed Senate Bill 422, which reschedules Pennsylvania’s primary election from April 28 to June 2 due to the COVID-19 emergency. Voters have the option to vote by mail-in ballot rather than going to their polling place on election day. Mail-in ballot applications will be accepted through Tuesday, May 26, 2020. If a voter has already applied for an absentee or mail-in ballot, they do NOT need to reapply.~ To obtain an Absentee Ballot in English click HERE. To obtain a Mail in Ballot click HERE.

We are doing a two-week calendar as we work our way through COVID-19. Click below on all of the April 2020 Calendars and Menu. Remember the menu and calendars are subject to change!
